The 2022 Formula Student China (FSC) was successfully held at the JAC testing ground in Hefei, Anhui Province from September 16 to 21, 2022. The Gspeed formula racing team of Jilin University stood out after the six-day fierce competition with 105 participating teams from Tsinghua University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Tongji University, Hunan University, and Jilin University (JLU). The team won first place in the racing car design, linear acceleration, and durability test, second place in skidpad, third place in cost manufacturing analysis, and won the fastest lap prize in the whole competition. It successfully defended the championship of the Formula Student China again with significant advantages, reaching a new record of “three consecutive championships” and “four champions in five years”. Meanwhile, the Gspeed electric formula racing team of Jilin University also won first place in racing car design and cost manufacturing analysis, and second place in high-speed obstacle avoidance in the electric group, whose total score was among the highest rankings of participating teams.

In 2022, the training progress and preparation of our student racing team were severely affected by the sudden outbreak of COVID-19. The test and training time was less than one-tenth of the time in previous years. On the way to the competition, the team went through a series of ups and downs such as pandemic control, trip postponement, flight cancellation, etc. With the care and support of leaders and all relevant functional departments of the university, the team finally arrived at the racing venue on the evening of the second day of the competition. During the competition, our students perseveringly overcame a lot of difficulties without complaint. They valued the opportunity and worked hard, fully demonstrating the spirit of JLU students.

The Formula Student China is the highest-level discipline competition in China’s automotive mechanics. Since its inception in 2010, our university has participated in all 13 competitions, won the national championship and national first prize many times, and represented Chinese college students to participate in international competitions. The form of the competition includes three static defense modules such as racing car design, cost manufacturing analysis and marketing simulation, and five dynamic test items, i.e. linear acceleration, skidpad, high-speed obstacle avoidance, durability, and economy. In the static defense, the knowledge reserve and spirit of our students won the praise of all expert judges. In the dynamic test, the excellent performance and robustness of our racing cars also won extensive recognition from all the participating teams present.

Founded in 2007, the student racing team of Jilin University supports and organizes students to independently design, develop and produce a series of racing car products every year and to participate in various high-level competitions, so as to foster students’ sense of innovation and practice, enhance their ability to solve engineering problems, and finally form a new model for training “new engineering” professionals. At present, the members of our student racing team come from more than ten colleges and disciplines throughout the whole process from undergraduate education to doctoral education. It trains more than 200 students each year and has a total of more than 1,500 excellent graduates, which has developed into China’s largest practical teaching platform for college students’ automotive sports, with the completest event category and the best technical skills.
